The Young Titan
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (June, 1959)
Average review score:

Historical Fiction Bar NoneF. Van Wyck Mason's book, "The Young Titan", ranks right up there with Edison Marshall, Kenneth Roberts, John Jennings, and Dale Van Every's historical fiction for his skill in portraying early New England life prior to and during the American Revolution. I actually learned more about the history of that period from their books than I ever did in high school, or from the text books. These books are especially interesting for those of us who live where so much of the history behind these stories actually took place.
An overlooked classicAs I searched through the books of historical fiction, I came across this old favorite. Set during the French & Indian War, or the War of the Austrian Succession as it was known in Europe, this book vivdly illustrates the differences between the Old and the New World. The seeds of rebellion are firmly planted among the colonials on both sides of the conflict. Great characters, royal spies and savage Indians led by Europeans gone native, drive the story as the English drive the French from North America. There are no lame skirmishes led by incompetent American Colonels ... just lots of intrigue and adventure culminating in the Battle of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, the French stronghold guarding the St. Lawrence river, the gateway to Quebec. This book is part Last of the Mohicans, part Northwest Passage, but with a contemporary pace. Anyone who loves American History and adventure stories will love this. Its really unfortunate that it's out-of-print. Hopefully, some publisher will rediscover this so a whole new generation can enjoy it.

African-American Bookshelf: 100 Must Reads from Before the Civil War Through Today
Published in Hardcover by Carol Pub Group (January, 1900)
Average review score:

A BLACK CANON IN LITERATURE...AT LAST!!Similar to Bennett's BEFORE THE MAYFLOWER, Clifford Mason's work dives into the rich history of African-Americans in such an intelligent, engaging way, that you almost forget that each and every chapter really happened to black people. It's perfect for those who are interested in learning about both the well-known and the not-so-famous champions of black civil rights. I personally loved reading so much about Ida B. Wells, one of the earliest known champions of black civil rights. With Mason's in-depth coverage of black history and his mastery of prose, this book will definitely become a great work in its own right. THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN BOOKSHELF is an important step towards creating a true BLACK CANON IN LITERATURE!

American Indian Basketry
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1989)
Average review score:

essential basketry readingIf you are interested in native American basketry, this book will be part of the backbone of your library. Originally published in 1904 as two volumes, when Dover published it, they were bound as one. As a Dover publication, it is, of course, an excellent value--I only wish it were available in hardcover. It has 460 wonderful old photographs and clear line drawings. Mr. Mason was a product of his times and his writing unfortunately reflects an often maddening white male superiority, however his scholarship and clear admiration of the craft, the baskets and their makers mitigates that fault. A must-have book.

Ask...: Life's Most Important Answers Are Found in Asking the Right Questions
Published in Paperback by Insight International Inc (August, 1996)
Average review score:

Insightful, probing, and to the point! This book is very easy to read. Each page is comprised of one or several thought-provoking questions or statements. Each reader attacks this book with their own point of view. Mason provides the canvas, the reader supplies the paints, brushes, and final work. Excellent self-help tool. Recommend highly. Both inspirational and self reflecting. Before you read another self help or how to, read this and find out where your head really is. This book is essential to know where to start, then move to another book to reinforce, and end up well rounded.

It also lists the know fate of the aircraft. ie where they were lost, and of all the crews. I have read on this subject extensivly and this is the definative book.

The Beckett Actor: Jack Macgowran, Beginning to End
Published in Hardcover by Past Times Pub Co (January, 1988)
Average review score:

Fascinating look at a fascinating actor. My interest in Irish theatre brought me to this book. What a find! A fascinating look at a fascinating actor. The author brings alive the work and times of MacGowran. A well-researched and thorough work recommended for any student of theatre. I was especially impressed with the variety of interview subjects. Made me do a search for MacGowran's available work on video. While not a big fan of Beckett, I was impressed by the relationship between the playwright and this ultimate interpreter of his works.
